Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam: A Cultural Pillar for Malayalees in the UAE

Introduction

Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam is one of the most prominent cultural organizations representing the Malayalee community in the United Arab Emirates. Established in 1969, the organization has played a vital role in bringing together Malayalees living in Abu Dhabi and promoting Kerala’s rich cultural heritage through various social and cultural initiatives.

Over the decades, Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam has become a symbol of unity, culture, and community support for thousands of Malayalees living across the Emirate.

History of Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam

The journey of Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam began in 1969, even before the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. The organization was founded with the aim of creating a cultural and social platform for Malayalees working and living in Abu Dhabi.

Since its inception, the Samajam has contributed significantly to strengthening the bond among Malayalees and preserving the traditions of Kerala in the Gulf region.

Today, the Samajam stands as one of the oldest expatriate community organizations in Abu Dhabi, reflecting the strong presence of the Kerala community in the UAE.

Recognition by UAE Leadership

During the inauguration of the new building of Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam in Mussafah, Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, highlighted the significance of the organization.

He remarked that the Samajam, founded in 1969, is older than the UAE itself, emphasizing the long-standing presence and contributions of the Malayalee community to the country’s development.

He also acknowledged that Malayalees were present during the founding of the UAE in 1971 by the nation’s founder Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, underlining their role in the progress of the nation.

The Balavedi focuses on nurturing young talents by conducting educational and cultural programs for children, ensuring that the younger generation remains connected to Kerala’s culture and traditions.

Contribution of Malayalees to the UAE

The Malayalee community has made significant contributions to the development of the UAE across various sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering, business, and technology.

As highlighted by Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Kerala is known as one of the most literate and socially developed states in India, and Malayalees have played an important role in the peace, prosperity, and growth of the UAE.
